Journey through the Spiritual Roots of Edoite
When you think of Asakusa, the first things that probably come to mind are the “Kaminarimon Gate” or “Senso-ji Temple.” However, the largest festival in Asakusa, the “Sanja Matsuri,” is actually the annual festival of Asakusa Jinja Shrine, located right next to Senso-ji Temple. Why is there a shrine next to the temple? Exploring this history reveals the key to Asakusa’s prosperity and the spiritual roots of its people.
The story dates back to the year 628. At that time, Asakusa was a vast field, a far cry from the bustling place it is today. One day, two fishermen brothers were fishing in the Sumidagawa River when something strange happened: instead of catching fish, they repeatedly pulled up a sacred statue. When they showed it to a wise man in town, they discovered it was a statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, and they enshrined it with great reverence. This is the origin of Senso-ji Temple. The three people involved—the two fisherman brothers and the wise man—are enshrined as deities at Asakusa Jinja Shrine.
Alongside Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Jinja Shrine, the town of Asakusa developed, attracting not only commoners but also samurai, including members of the Tokugawa family during the Edo period. For the people of Asakusa, the area is inseparable from Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Jinja Shrine, and the Sumidagawa River, where the Kannon statue appeared, holds great significance.
To people from Western countries, it might seem strange that Japanese people visit both temples (Buddhism) and shrines (Shinto). However, in Japan, faith transcends religious boundaries and serves as a spiritual foundation for the people. Understanding the roots of a place and its people adds depth to any journey through Japan, enriching your stay and offering insights into uniquely Japanese customs and their origins.
